That $30 end mill I swore by was actually junk - 3 broken parts later

I used to think cheap HSS end mills were fine for aluminum. Bought a 10 pack for $30 on Amazon, figured it was a deal. Broke 3 of them in one afternoon cutting some 6061 parts. Then a guy at the shop let me try his $12 single carbide end mill. It cut clean, no chatter, and is still going after 40 parts. Has anyone else found that spending more on tooling actually saves money in the long run?

Smoking brisket with oak vs hickory taught me something about patience

I spent 3 years using hickory on every brisket at my backyard setup in Austin. Got good bark but it was always a bit harsh. Switched to oak after a buddy who cooks at Franklin's told me to try it. The smoke flavor came through way smoother and the meat stayed moist through the whole stall. Any of you guys switch woods and notice a big difference?

Overheard a guy at the comic shop last Saturday comparing old vs new fans

I was at my local shop, Comic Quest in Austin, flipping through back issues when some dude told his friend that anyone who started reading after 2015 isn't a real fan. It got me thinking about how gatekeeping just pushes people away. I started collecting in 2008 and still feel like a newbie sometimes, so who are we to judge? Has anyone else had weird encounters with fans who act like there's a secret membership test?

Bought a 10-pound bag of rice from the Asian market for $14 and it lasted me 4 months

I finally got tired of buying those tiny boxes of rice at the regular grocery for $3 a pop. So I went to H-Mart and grabbed a huge bag of jasmine rice for $14. That thing sat in my pantry and I cooked from it almost every day for four months. It saved me so much money it's ridiculous, but now I have no idea what to do with the empty bag. Anyone else go through a massive rice phase like this?

Had to pick between WiFi and wired for my backyard cam setup

I spent last weekend debating whether to go with a wireless Ring cam or run a PoE cable to a cheap Dahua bullet cam for my back fence. Picked the wired option because my neighbor's WiFi is spotty and I got a 50 foot Cat6 for $12 on Amazon. The Dahua gives me clear 1080p even at night but I spent 3 hours crawling through the attic to route the cable. Anyone else regret going wireless for outdoor cams?

Painted my whole living room and hit exactly 3 gallons used

I just finished painting my 12x16 living room in Austin and the math worked out perfectly. Three gallons of Valspar paint covered two coats on the walls, the ceiling, and the trim with barely any left over. Has anyone else ever nailed a project like that where the supplies lined up almost too perfect?

I spent years thinking a certain torque sequence was just a suggestion

I was helping a friend with his vintage Beechcraft Bonanza engine mount, following the manual from 1978. I'd always done the bolts in a star pattern but kind of guessed the order. He pointed to a tiny, faded diagram in the appendix showing a specific 12-step sequence I'd never noticed. We did it by the book and the final torque values were way more even across all points. That old manual was right all along. Anyone else find a hidden detail in an ancient manual that fixed a long habit?
