Update: my blu ray player ate my Akira disc during the bike scene
So last Saturday I was rewatching Akira on my 4 year old Sony player and right in the middle of the bike slide scene it made this grinding noise and just froze on a frame. I hit eject and out comes the disc with a big scratch ring around it, totally toast. Now I'm stuck deciding if I buy the same movie again or use it as an excuse to finally get the 4K version. Has anyone had a player do this to a disc you loved, and did you bother trying to get it resurfaced somewhere?
Why would you even think about resurfacing a scratched disc when the player itself is the real problem here? If that Sony is chewing up discs during the bike scene, it's gonna do the same thing to a fresh copy or a 4K disc too, so you'd just be throwing money at the same broken machine. A resurfacing job usually runs like five bucks and can bring a disc back, but it's a band-aid, not a fix for whatever is wrong with the player's laser or spindle. Most people skip the resurface because the scratch ring from a player is often too deep to save anyway, it's not like a light scuff from dropping it on the floor. So forget the disc for a second, replace or service that player first or you'll just be feeding it more movies to destroy. Spending money on a new copy while keeping the same cursed machine is the worst move you could make here.
