Hit 200 job applications in 6 months and my mentor told me to stop counting
I sent out application number 200 on a Tuesday night at my kitchen table in Columbus, and I just stared at my spreadsheet feeling nothing. My old supervisor Ray asked how many I had done and when I said 200 he laughed and said the number was the problem, not the market. Turns out I was applying to anything with a paycheck instead of the 15 roles I actually wanted, so I cut the list down and got two interviews in a week. Has anyone else tracked a number like this and had it mess with their head?
Watched my friend do the same thing last year, she hit like 150 apps and was crying every Sunday night. I always thought the number kept you motivated, like a scoreboard, you know? But then she stopped cold turkey and only went after 10 jobs she actually cared about and got a callback in like four days. So yeah, I used to roll my eyes at the "quality over quantity" thing but I get it now, the number just becomes this thing you hide behind so you don't have to sit with the rejections. Ray sounds like he knew what he was talking about.
