I thought hiring algorithms were fair until I saw my coworker get auto-rejected by a resume screener
Last month my coworker Maria applied for a promotion at our company in Chicago and got an email rejection in under 4 hours. I was sure the system was fair because it just matches skills to job requirements. Then she showed me her years of experience and certifications lined up perfectly with the posting. I found out the algorithm was filtering for a specific degree keyword she didn't have, even though she had 8 years doing the actual work. So now I think these systems need a human review step, not just auto-filters. Has anyone here actually seen a company fix this kind of bias once it was pointed out?
I read an article about a study from Cornell that found resume screeners can end up hurting diversity without anyone meaning for it to happen. Some companies have started doing regular audits on their hiring tools, but it usually takes a lawsuit or a big push from employees to get them to actually change anything. So yeah, the fix is possible, but it seems like it only happens when people make noise about it.
