inWhy I think inmate tablet programs are a waste of money
Wait, thirty five dollars a month just for a tablet? That's basically price gouging people who have zero other options.

inThinking back on how I used to job hop every 18 months...
Honestly same here, I was scared to leave my first job after 4 years but the second place gave me a 30% bump just for walking in the door. Then I did it again a couple years later and got another big jump that would've taken me maybe 5 more years to hit if I stayed. Nowadays I tell everyone starting out to move around every 2-3 years if the raises aren't keeping up.

inHeads up about that drafting supply swap meet on 34th street
Ehh, I dunno man, feels like this might be overthinking it a bit. A 32nd is like 0.03 inches, that's basically the width of a few sheets of paper, not exactly a dealbreaker on most stuff. If the part was already running fine before, maybe it's just some dust or a burr that got wiped off.

inAppreciation post: A chat with the inspector on the Baytown job about weld preheat
Patience becomes part of the work" - that line really stuck with me. I had a buddy who built custom knives on the side, and he'd spend hours just watching the steel change color in the forge, not rushing anything. One time he showed me how he let a blade sit in the oil longer than most guys would, and the difference in the edge was night and day. He always said if you can't wait for the metal to tell you when it's ready, you'll end up with a piece that looks fine but fails when you need it most. I think about that a lot.

inRemember when we just eyeballed post hole depth?
Over on my first fencing crew, the foreman painted the heads of all the digging bars bright orange and the post hole diggers bright green. That simple color code saved us loads of confusion and arguments. Once you do that, even the greenest hand can grab the right tool without a second thought.
