Rant: saw a light over Lake Michigan from the 12th floor of a Chicago hotel and I still check flight trackers every time now
Back in September I was on the 12th floor of a hotel in Chicago for a work thing, and around 11pm I stepped onto the balcony facing the lake. There was this orange light hanging low over the water, not moving like a plane and not blinking like a helicopter, just sitting there for maybe 4 minutes before it dimmed out. I downloaded a flight tracker app right there on the spot and there was nothing on it, no helicopters, no drones, nothing scheduled in that corridor. I told the front desk guy the next morning and he just shrugged and said people report weird stuff over the lake a couple times a year, which did not make me feel better. Now every single time I travel I pull up the tracker first thing when I get to my room, like it has become a ritual I cannot drop. Part of me wants it to be a drone or a flare so I can relax, and part of me does not. Anyone else had a sighting near a big body of water like that, or am I just the guy who stares at the lake too long?
Something sitting low and not moving actually rules out most drones and planes anyway, since those have to keep flying or they fall out of the sky. A flare would sink or burn out fast too, so four minutes of hovering is the part that makes your story weird to me. The tracker ritual makes sense, but next time point your phone camera at it and zoom, because that gets you way more than an app ever will.
