Saw a light over my neighbor's field in Vermont and had to pick between calling someone or just watching
Two Fridays ago I was out on my back porch in Vermont around 10pm letting my dog out when I noticed a steady orange light sitting low over my neighbor's hay field. It wasn't blinking like a plane and it wasn't moving like a drone, it just hovered there maybe 300 feet up for a solid 12 minutes. I stood there with my phone in my hand going back and forth on whether to call the local police non-emergency line or just keep watching. I ended up not calling because I figured they'd laugh at me, and I honestly regret it because it drifted sideways way faster than any helicopter I've ever seen and then the light just cut out. My wife thinks it was a drone with a spotlight but it made zero sound, and I've been around enough farm equipment to know what a drone motor sounds like. Now I keep a pair of cheap binoculars by the door and I check that field every clear night like a weirdo. Has anyone else seen a light that just hangs there and then vanishes when it moves?
12 minutes is a long time to stand there with your phone out, so I get why you froze up on the call. I had something kinda similar over the reservoir behind my place, a steady white light that just sat there maybe 200 feet up while I had my hand on the screen ready to dial. I didn't call either and felt dumb about it after, mostly because it slid off sideways way faster than a chopper could and then blinked out. The no sound thing is what would mess with me too, since you can hear a drone from a good ways off on a quiet night. Honestly the part where you keep checking the field now makes total sense to me. You saw something real and your brain just wants a second look at it.
