My landlord's note about the vent filter changed everything
They left a sticky note saying I was ruining the HVAC with cheap fiberglass filters, so I switched to a $15 pleated MERV 8 and my electric bill dropped $30 in one month. Has anyone else had a landlord call out something you were doing wrong without meaning to help?

Thirty bucks off sounds nice, but that's probably just the weather changing more than your filter...

Did your electric meter just happen to take a vacation the same month you swapped out that filter? Look, I get it, thirty bucks is thirty bucks, but that math is about as solid as a cardboard air filter. Next thing you know, your landlord will leave a note saying your new lightbulbs saved the neighborhood from a blackout. Hey, if switching to a pricey filter makes you sleep better at night, I say go for it, just don't start measuring your savings in unicorn tears.
