Heard a tech at the supply house say he never checks the dryer vent hose, and it scared me
I was standing in line at the supply house in Boise last Tuesday and overheard a guy on his phone say he skips checking the vent hose on every dryer call because it adds 10 minutes he can't bill for. That floored me because a clogged hose is how you get a house fire, and it takes two minutes with a flashlight and your hand to feel for lint buildup. I started checking every single call after that, and out of 14 dryers this month, 3 had hoses packed solid enough that airflow was cut way down. The homeowner never knows it is happening either, they just think the dryer is getting old. If you are skipping that check on your route, what made you decide it wasn't worth the time?
Checked a dryer last month where the hose looked fine from the outside but when I pulled it off the back the whole thing was packed with a solid wall of lint like felt. Airflow was maybe 20 percent of what it should be. The thing is, that check takes me under a minute, not ten, and I do it while the drum is still spinning so I am not losing any time at all. I get that routes are tight and everybody is trying to make their numbers, but a house fire from a clogged vent is not something I want on my conscience for a few extra bucks. Three out of fourteen is a crazy high hit rate and that alone tells me it is worth the stop. What are you seeing on your calls, is it really that rare out there or are guys just not looking?
