My $400 ground-penetrating radar rental found nothing but old pipes
Rented a GPR unit for a weekend survey near Santa Fe and it chirped on buried plumbing instead of the adobe foundation I was hunting. Has anyone else had success with cheaper magnetometer gear for small site mapping, or am I just throwing cash at the wrong tool?

A magnetometer at that Santa Fe site will mostly sniff out iron and old cans, not the clay adobe walls you want, so it is probably not the fix. GPR is still the right pick for finding a foundation, but a $400 rental with the wrong antenna frequency will keep pinging pipes all day. Spend that money on a better antenna or hire a local surveyor who knows the soil out there.
