My $400 ground-penetrating radar rental found nothing but old pipes

Rented a GPR unit for a weekend survey near Santa Fe and it chirped on buried plumbing instead of the adobe foundation I was hunting. Has anyone else had success with cheaper magnetometer gear for small site mapping, or am I just throwing cash at the wrong tool?
