Spent 3 hours at the Mesa Verde museum last Saturday staring at a single sandal and I still have questions
There's a 1,400 year old woven sandal in the display case at Mesa Verde that's in better shape than the pair I bought at REI two years ago, and I can't stop thinking about whoever wore it and whether they complained about it rubbing on their heel like I do.
That bit about the heel rubbing got me, because I had a pair of boots that chewed up my ankle for a whole summer and I just kept wearing them with extra socks like an idiot. It makes you wonder if some guy 1,400 years ago was doing the same thing, folding a little yucca leaf in there and grumbling on his way to the fields. We act like comfort is a modern idea, but sore feet have probably been annoying people since the first person figured out how to weave anything at all.
