Honestly, that $15 a month in 2010 would have been a solid investment. I watched a friend's free forum get shut down when the host changed their rules overnight. You lose all control and your community just disappears. Building on your own site from the start gives you something you actually own. Tbh, the free option feels like a shortcut that costs more in the long run.
