Question about the diner menu board in Sandusky that tripled in size since I was a kid
Stopped at a diner off Route 6 in Sandusky last month, same one my dad took me to back around 1998, and the menu board behind the counter has gone from one little panel to basically a wall of options. Same 9 stools, same cracked vinyl, but now there are like 40 items up there and half of them are things I can't even picture my dad ordering. I get it, places have to keep up, but it made me wonder if I'm just getting old or if the food really did get more complicated. Does anyone else have a spot like this where the room stayed the same but the menu ran off without you?
Is a bigger menu board really a problem though? In my experience these old diners add stuff because folks ask for it, and the kitchen just tacks it on the same board. My guess is half those 40 items are the same few ingredients in different combos, so it looks worse than it is. Your mileage may vary, but I'd bet the core stuff your dad ordered is still sitting right there, maybe even in the same spot. Places off a highway like Route 6 have to give tourists a reason to stop, so the wall grows. Take it with a grain of salt, but I don't see this as some big sign of anything.
