That Tuesday in 2009 when my whole baseball card collection got rained on and I became a plastic bin guy
Back in August 2009, I left two shoeboxes of cards on my parents' screened porch in Cleveland after sorting them for a trade with a guy from a forum. A storm rolled through around 4am and I woke up to find the boxes soaked, with my 1987 Topps set looking like wet cereal. I lost maybe 200 cards that day, including a rookie card I'd paid $60 for at a show in Akron. My dad handed me a rubber bin from the garage and said "this is why we don't trust cardboard," and honestly he was right. Anyone else get wrecked by one dumb mistake and change how they store stuff forever?
Kinda disagree with the lesson you took from this, man. The problem wasnt cardboard, it was leaving your cards outside overnight when you knew a storm might come. I've had cards in shoeboxes for 20 years in my closet and theyre totally fine, because they never sat on a porch during a thunderstorm. A rubber bin isnt better storage, its just better weatherproofing for one specific dumb moment. What actually wouldve saved you was checking the forecast or just bringing the boxes inside before bed, not switching to plastic. Sorry about the rookie card though, that one stings for real.
