Saw a salvage yard in Reno organize parts by VIN, blew my mind
Stopped by Pick-n-Pull off of 80 last Tuesday to grab a window regulator for my 04 Tacoma. They got this new system where every pulled part gets tagged with the donor VIN and entered into a tablet at the front desk. I typed in my truck's VIN and it showed me three compatible doors, two alternators, and a radiator from the same generation. Took me maybe 20 minutes to find everything versus the usual hour of wandering rows. Got the regulator for $35 plus core, and it bolted in with zero fight. Has anyone else seen yards doing this VIN matching thing, or is my local spot just ahead of the curve?
Man, next thing you know they'll have parts handing you a beer and a receipt while you wait. Sounds like heaven compared to my yard where the parts are filed under "eh, somewhere over there."
Twenty minutes to find a regulator? That's some black magic right there. Around here, the old-timer behind the counter just squints at you and says "Tacoma? Nah, haven't seen one of those in weeks" before you've even finished your sentence.
