That old diesel mechanic at the Union 76 changed how I think about oil

I was getting gas at this Union 76 off I-5 in Tacoma maybe 8 years ago, and this older guy was parked next to me with a worn out F-250. He saw me checking my dipstick and just goes 'you know, that cheap oil you're using is gonna cost you a rebuild in 50k miles.' I kinda laughed it off because I thought oil is oil. But he walked me over to his truck and showed me his oil change log he keeps in the glovebox, every single change written down with the brand and mileage since 2003. That conversation stuck with me because I realized how many little shortcuts I take that add up to big problems down the road. Now I always run full synthetic and keep a logbook in my own truck. Has anyone else had a random stranger give advice that actually saved them money?

Logbook tells you more about driver habits than oil type ever will.

Did the logbook include how hard he was on the engine, or just the miles?
