Old tech told me to always check the bonding strap first on comm issues
My first year on the line, a 30-year vet told me to start with the bonding strap whenever a plane had radio static. I laughed it off and spent 2 hours chasing grounds and antennas on a Gulfstream. Finally checked the bonding strap and it had a break you could barely see. Has anyone else gotten stuck on something simple because you ignored advice from the old timers?

Old timers know the simple fix usually is the right one.

Yeah I get that but sometimes simple just means nobody wanted to dig into the real problem. I've seen plenty of quick fixes turn into bigger headaches later.

Yeah "quick fixes turning into bigger headaches" is exactly what I've run into more times than I can count. Best approach I've found is to ask yourself what'll happen if that fix fails in six months then plan accordingly. Simple is good but only if it holds up when nobody's watching.
