Why does nobody talk about the time you ask a simple question and get a whole lecture instead

I was at a family thing last weekend and asked my uncle, who works in IT, how to fix a slow computer. I mean, I just wanted a quick tip, maybe clear the cache or something. He launched into a 45 minute breakdown of RAM allocation and registry errors, and I just had to stand there nodding. Has anyone else had a simple 'ask anything' moment totally hijacked like that?

My friend got let go from the Springfield library over a joke about overdue books

It happened last Tuesday, she posted a meme on her private account saying 'If you owe more than $50 in late fees, the library should send a repo man for your books.' Someone from work saw it, reported it to HR, and they said it made the library look aggressive. She was out the door by Friday. Is that really a fireable offense, or are we just too sensitive now?

Update: My old manager from the 2010s just emailed me asking for a reference

He was the type who always said 'just put your head down and work hard' back when we shared a cubicle wall. Now he's looking for a new job himself and his note was full of questions about networking and personal branding. I finally looked at my credit card statement line by line...

I was just paying the minimum for months, thinking I was fine. Then my friend in Dallas asked what my interest rate was, and I had to look it up. I saw I was paying $45 a month just in interest on a $2,000 balance. It hit me that I was basically renting my own money. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you saw the real cost?

Been using the wrong size socket on oil drain plugs for way too long

Had a 2012 Civic on the lift last week and the drain plug was just not coming loose. I was cranking on it with a 17mm, getting mad. My buddy walks by and goes, 'That's a 14mm, man.' I've been grabbing the 17mm for Hondas for years because it fits over the bolt head, but it's sloppy. The 14mm is the actual correct size and grips way better. No wonder I've rounded off a couple over time. How many other 'close enough' socket habits do you think we pick up without noticing?

Showerthought: I had to choose between filming a weird light in the sky or grabbing my dog before he ran into traffic.

I picked the dog, obviously, and by the time I looked up the light was gone, so now I just have a story about almost losing my beagle, Bruno, in Phoenix instead of proof.

Just realized my old client pitch was way too long and complicated

I used to send these huge emails with my whole life story and every single service I offered, which took me about an hour to write. After getting zero replies for a month, I cut it down to three lines saying what I do, who I help, and a link to my portfolio. Has anyone else found that keeping it stupid simple actually gets you more work?

Why does nobody talk about using a piece of copper pipe to set a drift?

I mean, I was trying to drift a hole in a hammer head last week and my steel drift kept getting stuck, like, every single time. I was getting so mad, I almost threw the thing. Then I remembered my grandpa saying something about copper being softer, so I cut a short piece of half-inch copper pipe and hammered it in first. It actually worked, the steel drift went right through after that. Has anyone else tried this trick, or am I just lucky?
