My neighbor swore by $1.50 ramen bombs, but my doctor said no
So this older guy in my apartment building, Mike, he lives off that instant ramen with an egg and some frozen veggies thrown in. He eats it like 5 nights a week and swears it's the smartest dollar he spends. He showed me his grocery receipt from last Tuesday: 6 packs for $9. I laughed and told him I spent that on one avocado at the corner store. But then he said something like "you're paying for convenience, not nutrition" and walked off. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I'm the fool for spending $12 on a salad bowl when his whole week of dinners costs less than my one lunch. Has anyone else had that talk with someone who genuinely thrives on the cheapest possible meal? Does it actually work long term, or is he just lucky with his health?
The line about paying for convenience instead of nutrition is the whole thing right there, and it's the same trap we all fall into with coffee, takeout, whatever. People who eat cheap and simple are usually not trying to be smart about it, they just never got used to paying someone else to do the work. Your neighbor will probably be fine because an egg and frozen veggies in broth is not the worst dinner, but five nights a week of that salt will catch up to a guy eventually.
