Friend of mine called me out on over-editing my portraits

Last week a buddy who does film photography looked at my digital work and said "you've smoothed everything until it looks like plastic." He pointed out I'd removed the freckles and skin texture from a model shot I did in Portland. After staring at it for ten minutes I realized he was right - my stuff looked like airbrushed ads instead of actual people. Any other digital artists struggle with knowing when to stop fixing things?

Warning: That portfolio showcase event at the convention center last month changed how I organize my layers

I was at the Digital Art Expo in Dallas back in March. Set up my tablet to show some work on the big screen and my layers were a mess. Had 40 layers with names like 'layer 3 copy 5' and 'untitled'. Another artist next to me had everything grouped and named clean. His stuff looked way more professional just because it was organized. I spent the whole weekend embarrassed to let anyone scroll through my file. Now I name every layer and group before I even start drawing. Has anyone else had their file structure called out at a showcase?

I was messing with my tablet pen pressure and accidentally hit the monitor power button. Drawing blind for 30 seconds gave me a way cleaner line than staring at the screen because I focused on the actual hand movement instead. Anyone else tried something weird like that?

Spent 6 hours trying to fix a color profile issue on my monitor

Last week I finished a piece in Procreate and when I exported it to my laptop the colors looked way off. Reds were almost orange and skin tones looked grey. I spent a whole Sunday tweaking settings, calibrating with a SpyderX, and searching forums. Turns out my monitor was set to sRGB instead of Display P3 which Procreate uses by default. Has anyone else had this kind of color mismatch between devices?

Just realized I was saving my digital paintings at too low a resolution for 6 months

I was exporting all my art at 72 DPI because I thought that was fine for online posting. Then a print shop guy told me my files would look blurry if I ever wanted to make prints. I checked my export settings and yeah I had been using the wrong preset the whole time. Has anyone else messed up their export settings and lost a ton of quality without knowing?

Appreciation post: The person who puts the art title and medium in focus order drives me nuts

I keep seeing digital pieces in showcases where the artist puts the title as 'Sunset Overload (Digital, 2024)' but then in the description they write 'did this on procreate' and nothing else. The whole point of a showcase is to see the work and know what you're looking at, not hunt for basic info. Last week in a gallery thread I had to scroll through 40 comments just to find out someone used Blender for a 3D piece they posted. Why not just lead with the tools and process right up front? Has anyone else noticed this messing up how easy it is to actually learn from other artists here?

Warning: I was using 300 DPI for all my web art for like 2 years

So I've been making digital paintings and posting them online since 2021. Last month I uploaded a piece to ArtStation and someone in the comments asked why my file was 24 inches wide at 300 DPI for a screen display. I honestly didn't know what they meant. I thought higher DPI always meant better quality. Turns out screens only show at 72 DPI and I was just making unnecessarily huge files for no reason. My exports were like 50MB each for no benefit. Has anyone else misunderstood DPI settings for digital vs print work?

Spent 4 hours trying to fix color banding in my digital prints

I was getting these ugly stripes in my gradient backgrounds when I printed my art at a local shop. Tried everything in Procreate and Photoshop for hours. Turns out it was the file format. My tablet pen died mid-commission and I lost 3 hours of work

Working on a big piece for a client. Got into the flow around 9pm. Suddenly my Wacom pen just stopped responding. No warning, no low battery indicator. Took me 20 minutes to realize the nib was completely worn down to the sensor. Had to restart the whole shading process on that layer. Anyone else have a tool fail at the worst possible moment?

Three days wasted on a layer mask that was literally invisible

I swear I spent 72 hours trying to figure out why my digital painting looked flat. I kept tweaking colors, adjusting opacity, even reinstalled my tablet drivers twice. Turned out I had a layer mask on with black paint that was hiding half the detail. I accidentally clicked the mask thumbnail in Clip Studio and saw it there plain as day. Anybody else have a stupid simple fix that made you want to throw your screen out the window?

I posted a landscape piece on DeviantArt last year and this one person just said 'the sun is behind the house but the shadows don't match.' I spent 3 hours redoing the whole lighting layer after that. Has anyone else had a single critique totally change how you approach a piece?

Now I always check my values in grayscale first and it stopped me from making everything look so flat and shiny, has anyone else gotten a weirdly specific critique that actually helped?

I finally figured out why my gallery wall looked off

Hung 12 frames at the Dallas artist co-op last weekend and something bugged me for two hours. Turned out I was spacing them by eye instead of using the golden ratio trick my buddy showed me. Once I shifted the center piece 3 inches left the whole thing clicked. Anyone else ever spend way too long fixing a spacing issue?

Hit 500 sales on my print shop today and I still don't get it

I started uploading my digital paintings to a print-on-demand site back in February just to see what would happen. Never really pushed it on social media or anything. Checked my dashboard this morning and saw I crossed 500 prints sold. That's like 500 people who paid real money for something I made on a tablet in my living room. Stop putting your watermark right in the center of the image

I kept seeing people do this in galleries and on instagram. It ruins the whole composition. I learned this from a designer friend who does album covers. Put it in a corner or along the edge. People still can't crop it out easily and your art actually looks good. Anyone else notice this hurt their engagement until they moved it?

Hot take: art station pages need to stop hiding the process shots

I was browsing through a concept artist's portfolio from Seattle last night and noticed they only posted the final polished render. I had to dig through their Instagram to find the 3 rough blockout stages which actually taught me more than the finished piece. It got me thinking about how we present our work online and if showing only the final version really helps other artists learn. Anyone else prefer seeing the messy early versions instead of just the pretty end result?

I keep seeing digital artists spend hours on soft lighting and gradients for their showcase pieces, but my eye always goes straight to the folks using bold, flat shapes with no blending. She was talking about how I had this habit of putting the focal point dead center like I was aiming for a mailbox.
