I spent only $27 on groceries for a full week of dinners

I tracked every penny for my meals last week and the total shocked me. I made a big pot of lentil soup, a bean and rice skillet, and used a whole chicken for three different dishes. It made me see how much I was wasting before. What's the cheapest meal you've made that actually filled you up?

I just hit 10,000 hours on my main scan tool and the data it showed me was a shock

It's a Snap-on Zeus, and I bought it new when I opened my shop in Spokane six years ago. The total fault code count was only 1,847, which means a huge chunk of my time is just chasing weird electrical gremlins and doing PMs, not major diag. Makes me think we're all getting better at building these things, or the problems are just getting sneakier. What's the ratio of diag to repair time look like in your bay lately?

Warning: The shift to all-electric fleets is moving too fast for Detroit's infrastructure

I saw a huge change in my neighborhood over the last year. The city put in a block of six public EV chargers near the old Packard plant. Before they went in, that lot was just empty. Now, every time I drive by, at least four of them are broken or have an 'out of service' sign. The city spent a ton of money, but they didn't plan for the upkeep. The tech is cool, but the business model for maintaining it isn't there yet. We're pushing hard to be a leader, but the basics aren't covered. Has anyone else seen new public tech projects that just fell apart after the first six months?

My neighbor's comment on brisket trimming made me stop and think

He said, 'You're not cooking a whole brisket, you're cooking the flat and the point separately, they just happen to be attached.' He was talking about how he trims the fat seam between the two muscles more aggressively in St. Louis. It clicked that I'd been treating it as one piece of meat instead of two that finish at different times. How do you guys handle that fat cap between the muscles?

Heard a client say she hasn't had a real shampoo in a salon since 2019, just uses dry shampoo.

It made me realize how many people might be skipping the foundational steps we were taught. Anyone else seeing this and adjusting their consultation questions?

Vent: My best Milky Way shot got ruined by a car's headlights

I was out at Joshua Tree last month, set up my Sky-Watcher mount for a 3 hour stack of the galactic core. Had everything dialed in, perfect focus, tracking was solid. Right at the 2 hour mark, a car pulled into the parking area about 50 yards away and just left their high beams on for a full 10 minutes. The whole foreground was blown out and the sky glow washed out half my subs. I was so mad I almost packed up, but I decided to just wait them out. They finally left, and I got another 45 minutes of data. In processing, I had to toss like 70 frames from the middle of the sequence, but stacking the good ones with the new ones still gave me a decent final image. Has anyone else salvaged a session after a major light pollution spike like that?

Talking to a new apprentice made me miss the old shop drawing boards

This kid was showing me his CAD model for a vanity, all rendered and perfect. He asked how we did it 'back in the day.' I told him we had a 4x8 sheet of plywood on sawhorses as a drawing table, with rolls of vellum and a whole cup of different pencils. Took half a day just to lay out a complicated built-in. He looked at me like I was describing building a pyramid. I don't miss the time it took, but there was something about the physical act of drawing it full-size that made you feel every joint and overhang. Does anyone still keep a big board around for quick sketches, or is it all digital now?

Finally hit 500 linear feet of cedar fence in a single week

That's a new personal best for me, and it felt good to see the whole line go up so clean. Anyone else find they work faster with a certain type of wood?

Update: I finally chose the $200 grinder over the $400 one for my home setup

I went with the cheaper one thinking it'd be fine, but now my pour-overs taste way more bitter than before. Anyone have a good fix for this, or did I just learn a hard lesson?
