I finally saw the warning signs in a vendor contract before it was too late
Ngl, I was reviewing a renewal from our logistics provider in Cleveland and noticed they quietly added a 15% surcharge clause tied to fuel index changes that wasn't in the original terms. My ops manager flagged it during a routine audit, and when I called the rep, he said it was standard language but couldn't explain why it was buried on page 14. Has anyone else caught sneaky add-ons like this slipping into renewals, and how do you push back without burning the relationship?
Fuel surcharges are pretty much standard in logistics these days, so maybe the real question is why you didn't expect one on a renewal. Page 14 is a weird spot, sure, but the rep probably just copied the boilerplate from another contract without thinking about it. You could have picked up the phone and asked for a modest cap on that percentage before you even brought your ops manager into it. Pushing back over a clause that barely moves your annual cost might be the thing that actually burns the relationship.
