The print shop owner in Toledo who taught me what a service really is
Back when I was starting my little consulting thing, a print shop owner named Ray let me run my invoices on his machine for free for 4 months, and when I asked how to pay him back he just said "send me your clients who need business cards." That one line taught me more about B2B than any course, because he saw the whole chain instead of just my one order. Curious if anyone else had a mentor like that early on, someone who gave you a break before you could pay for it?
The part about seeing the whole chain is what gets me, because most people only help when they can bill you for it. Ray basically made a bet on your future clients instead of your empty wallet, which is a way better filter for who's worth knowing. That kind of thing only works when the person helping you has enough slack to give it, so the real lesson is maybe to get to a spot where you can be Ray for somebody else.
