Bought a $30 inflatable pillow, still woke up with a crick in my neck
Picked it up before a 4 day stretch on the Ozark Trail and figured it would beat shoving my puffy jacket under my head. Wrong. It deflated by 2am and I spent the rest of the night using my boot as a headrest. Anyone else swear off those cheap air pillows and just bring a folded fleece instead?
The real fix isn't the pillow itself, it's where you park your head. Most folks jam their neck flat against the ground, but a slight ditch under your shoulder changes everything. Dig a little hole or roll up your pack strap to cradle that curve, and the pillow type barely matters. Cheap foam or a wad of clothes works fine once your spine isn't doing a 90 degree bend.
