Guy at the trailhead in Bishop laughed at my 30 lb pack and I'm still bugged by it
So I'm standing at the North Lake trailhead outside Bishop last August, getting my permit checked. This guy, maybe 60, full ultralight setup, looks at my pack and goes "you packing rocks in there?" Loud enough for the whole lot to hear. I had a bear can, 4 days of food, and my old tent, so yeah it was heavy. He then tells the ranger, not me, "some people just don't learn." I did the whole Piute Pass loop with that weight and finished two hours ahead of his group. But here's the thing, I keep thinking about it on every trip now. Anyone else get needled at the trailhead by the gear police? How do you let it go?
