Pro tip: the Muir Pass day convinced me to flip my whole Sierra route direction
For a long time I planned to walk the JMT north to south, because that's how everyone I knew did it. Then a buddy dragged me on a 28 mile day over Muir Pass in July where we hit the snow fields at 7am and had firm footing the whole way up, and I realized going south to north puts the sun at your back on those climbs. We cruised down into LeConte Canyon by 2pm with dry feet while a northbound group was postholing through slush with wet socks. Now I'm reworking the whole route plan, so if anyone has flipped a long trail's direction, did the food resupply math end up harder or easier than you thought?
