Spent $140 on a satellite messenger, ended up hating it on the JMT
Everyone online swears by these things but mine was useless. I carried it for 8 days on the John Muir Trail and never got a single message out until I hit the top of a pass. The battery also drained twice as fast as advertised in cold weather. I get that it works for some people, but for a solo hiker like me it was dead weight. Anyone else ditch their expensive emergency gadget after a real trip?
My Garmin inReach lasted one night on the PCT before I used it to prop up my tent at a windy campsite. Guess it's good for something, just not what I paid for.
