I stopped buying bags of concrete for fence posts and started mixing my own, saved $340 on the last job
Everyone on here keeps saying to just grab the 80 pound bags from the big box store, and I did that for my first two fence builds. On a 12 post run in my own yard off Rattlesnake Road I went through almost 30 bags and spent close to $200 just on concrete. Then a guy at the local yard asked why I was paying for water and sand. So I bought a pallet of portland cement and a half yard of sand and mixed my own in a wheelbarrow. Same ratio, one part cement to three parts sand to three parts gravel, and it set up just as hard after a couple of days. The last job with 16 posts cost me around $60 in materials total. The catch is you need a decent wheelbarrow and a hoe and it is way more work, but my back got used to it after the first few holes. Anyone else mixing their own out there or am I the only one hauling sand in a pickup?
