Just realized my neighbor's bare dirt patch turned into a full lawn in 7 weeks and the change was almost too fast
Back in April my next door neighbor's yard was straight dirt with a couple dead spots where the dog ran laps, nothing but mud when it rained. He put down sod on Memorial Day weekend, about 800 sq ft of it, and watered it twice a day for the first three weeks. By the second weekend in July that yard was so thick you couldn't see a single seam, and he mowed it twice a week just to keep up. I asked what he did and he said the biggest thing was soil prep before the sod went down, he tilled in two inches of compost first. Now I'm wondering if my creeping bare spot needs the same treatment or if I can just toss seed down and hope. Anyone here laid sod versus seeded and can tell me which held up better after a year?
Did you see how much water he was dumping on it those first few weeks? That's the part people skip and then wonder why the sod dries up and dies. Sod wins if you prep and water it right, but seed is way cheaper and catches up fine by year two if you keep it damp. For a small bare patch I'd just seed it and save the money.
