My pergola bracket snapped after 14 months, fabric landed in the grill

Last Saturday I was flipping burgers and the whole shade sail came down when a galvanized bracket cracked clean through. I built the pergola in May of last year using 6x6 posts and cheap brackets from the big box store. The wind caught the fabric just right and the metal gave out, no rust either, just a bad casting. I ended up swapping all four brackets for heavy duty Simpson ones at $18 each, but now I'm wondering if I should have gone with a different design entirely. Has anyone else had those universal brackets fail on them, or did I just get a bad batch?
