Retaining wall debate: gabion baskets beat concrete blocks in my yard
Last spring I built a 40 foot retaining wall in my backyard in Austin. I did the first half with poured concrete blocks and the second half with wire gabion baskets filled with local limestone. After the heavy rains this fall, the block section has two cracked sections and needs re-leveling, but the gabions haven't moved a bit. The baskets cost about $300 more total and took longer to fill, but they drain water naturally and look way better. Has anyone else mixed methods like this on a sloped yard, and what won out for you?
