Sat through Santa Claus Conquers the Martians wrong for 20 years, then I got it
I used to watch this with friends and we'd just make fun of how dumb the Martians looked. Then my kid put it on last month and I realized I was missing the whole point. The movie isn't trying to be good, it's trying to be sincere, like a school play where everyone believes in it. The moment it clicked was when the Martian kid starts crying over the robot, and I actually felt bad for him. Has anyone else had that flip where a so-bad-it's-good movie suddenly becomes just plain good to you?
That moment with the kid crying over the robot got me too. I think there's a specific kind of movie that only works if you stop expecting it to be clever. Once you see it as something made by people who genuinely thought they were telling a sweet story about family and Christmas, the dumb Martian costumes stop mattering. I tried rewatching Plan 9 from Outer Space with that same mindset and it almost worked, but nothing has beat that flip with this one. Did you notice how the Martian dad actually cares about his kids the whole time, even when he's being a jerk about Santa? That's the part that made me feel like I was watching a different film entirely.
