Hot take: it took me 5 weeks to get my roommate to stop leaving wet towels on the bathroom floor
So my roommate Dan moved in back in March and right away he started dropping his wet towel on the tile right next to the shower. Not hanging it up, just a soggy pile. I asked him nicely twice, left a note on the mirror, and even bought a second hook for his side of the bathroom. Nothing worked. After 5 weeks of stepping on a cold wet towel every morning I finally figured out the real problem. He wasn't ignoring me on purpose, he genuinely thought towels dry fine on the floor because his old place had heated floors. Once I explained that our cheap apartment tile stays wet for hours and can grow mildew, he stopped. I felt kind of dumb for getting mad for so long. Has anyone else had a roommate issue that turned out to be a weird misunderstanding instead of actual carelessness?
Years ago I would've just called Dan lazy and moved on, but stuff like this has totally changed how I see roommate problems. My old roommate kept leaving dishes in the sink and I was so sure she was being rude, until she told me her family growing up always did dishes after dinner so she thought morning was fine. Like she honestly had no clue it bugged me. Now when something keeps happening I try to ask why instead of just getting annoyed. Half the time it's not lazy, it's just two people who learned different stuff growing up. Your heated floor thing makes total sense, Dan probably felt like he was doing nothing wrong.
