Spent $60 on a fancy bread lame, my old butter knife works better
I bought this expensive UFO-shaped lame with a curved blade last Tuesday because all the Instagram bakers swear by them. First try, the blade caught on the dough and dragged it into a mess, ruined my whole boule. I went back to my $2 butter knife, wet it with water, and got the cleanest ear I've ever made. Anyone else found that fancy tools are just a trap for home bakers, or am I missing something?
Saw a blog post last week about how most professional bakers just use a razor blade taped to a stick, so that pretty much says it all. The expensive stuff is really just for the videos and the counter looks. Butter knife gets the job done and honestly the ears might even look more rustic and charming that way.
