Just saw something at the new bakery on Main Street that made me double-check my own recipes

I stopped by that new place, The Crusty Loaf, yesterday for a coffee. I saw them pulling a tray of croissants from the oven and they were all flat and pale, like they didn't proof right. The baker looked super frustrated and tossed the whole tray. It made me realize I've never checked the expiration date on my own yeast packets. I always just assume they're good. Has anyone else had a batch fail because of old yeast?

My mom's bread machine sat unused for like two years, and when she tried it the dough was a sad brick. It's like what @thomas_sanchez said, stuff just gives up if you don't use it. I see it with old spices too, they just lose their point.

Yeah, old yeast is the worst... totally killed a sourdough starter once. That sinking feeling when nothing rises.

Ugh, @thomas_sanchez, I saw a thing that said old yeast can just lose its will to live. Total baking heartbreak.
