My old $15 radio pulled in the ballgame from 60 miles out, the $90 one gets nothing but static
I had a cheap little battery radio from a drugstore in Ogden that picked up clear AM stations from across the valley for years, but when it finally died I replaced it with a fancy digital one and now I can barely get a local station. Same house, same window sill, same antenna trick with a paperclip, and the expensive one still loses the signal every time a truck drives by. Did I just get a bad unit, or did they stop making tuners that actually hold a signal?
Sounds like your old radio had a good analog tuner which locks onto a weak signal, while the digital one jumps around trying to find the exact frequency. But the truck thing points to something else too, cheap AM radios had decent shielding and the new one might be picking up interference through the power or the case. Try running it on batteries only and see if the trucks still kill it.
