Am I the only one who used to cut every fade with a 2 guard open?

When I first started at the shop in Tempe, I was taught to set my baseline with a 2 guard open and work down from there. About a year ago, I switched to starting with a 1.5 guard closed after watching a guy at a barber battle in Phoenix. It gives me way more room to blend and the fades look softer now. I don't know why I stuck with the old way for so long. Anyone else make a small change that fixed a big part of their cut?

But a 2 open is just a 1.5 closed, right?

Actually depends on the hinge design, not just the numbers. Some doors have a different swing arc when they're partly open.

Nah, it's not that simple... had this fight with a fridge door last week. If the hinge is worn, a door at "2 open" might actually swing back to nearly closed on its own. The numbers are just a guide, not a rule. You gotta check the actual swing and maybe adjust the hinge, not just the stop.
