A judge told me my frame welds looked like bird droppings
I entered my 1967 Chevelle in a local show in Tulsa and the head judge pulled me aside. He pointed at my fresh frame patch welds and said they looked like something a pigeon left behind. I was embarrassed but he showed me how to stagger my welds and grind them flush instead of leaving beads stacked. Now I spend an extra hour on every frame repair and the joints look factory clean. Anyone else get a harsh critique that actually made their restorations better?
So did that head judge end up being a mentor type who checks your work at every show now, or was it a one-time deal?
I've seen guys get crushed by comments like that and quit doing their own metalwork, which is a shame because the learning curve is brutal but worth it.
The stagger trick alone probably saved you hours of grinding and filler down the road, but I'm curious if you ever went back and thanked the guy.
