Hashtag walls vs 2 or 3 real tags, I tested both for 30 days on my food page
I run a small sourdough page out of Spokane and got about 200 followers a month with those giant 30 hashtag blocks in my captions. Last month I switched to just 3 tags that actually describe the post and my reach went from 1,800 accounts to 6,400, which honestly shocked me. Now I'm wondering if I should go total zero tags like some accounts in my niche do, or if 3 is the sweet spot. Has anyone here run the no-tag experiment for a full month and seen it hold up?
The jump from 1,800 to 6,400 accounts is wild and I totally get why that would make you second guess everything. I run a small baking page and had the same thing happen when I dropped my tag wall, it felt like the app was finally showing my stuff to people who actually wanted to see it. About your real question, I did the zero tag thing for a full month back in the spring and honestly it held up okay but not great. My reach stayed close to what the 3 tag version was doing, but the comments and saves dropped off a bit, so the folks finding me seemed less interested. My gut says 3 tags is the sweet spot because it still tells the app what the post is about without looking like spam. Zero tags can work if your page already has a strong following, but for a smaller page like ours I would not drop them all the way down.
