A guy named Walt at my first shop in Erie showed me the bearing trick I still use today
I was 19 and working at a small shop on Peach Street in Erie, PA, back around 2008. Walt was maybe 60 and had been wrenching since he was a kid. One slow Tuesday he watched me fight a stuck bottom bracket for 20 minutes, getting madder by the minute. He walked over, didn't say a word, grabbed a chunk of old inner tube, wrapped it around the cup, and gave me a look. That rubber gave me just enough grip that the cup broke loose on the first real try. He said, 'The tool doesn't always need to be fancy, it just needs to fit the problem.' I still keep a cut-up tube in my box today, 15 odd years later, and it gets used more than some of my actual tools. Anybody else got a hack from an old timer that stuck with you more than any class or manual ever did?
