Heard a guy at the shop say disc brakes are always better than rim brakes - I had to bite my tongue

I was swapping tubes for a customer when some know-it-all told his friend that rim brakes are "obsolete" and disc is the only way to go, but I've seen plenty of high-end road bikes with rim brakes stop just fine in dry conditions and they're way simpler to maintain. Has anyone else dealt with customers buying into the hype and ignoring what actually fits their riding?

Yeah my buddy spent a fortune on discs and now his rims rub every other ride.

Oh man, I used to be totally in the "discs are always better" camp honestly. Then I helped my cousin swap a set of Hope Tech 4s onto his trail bike and we spent three hours chasing a rub that just wouldn't go away no matter how careful we were with the rotor truing. Now I get why some guys stick with good rim brakes for all-weather riding, less hassle when you just wanna pedal and not mess with your bike every other day. Makes me rethink all the money I've thrown at hydro setups over the years.

@wyatt135 so your buddy's still running fixed rotors or did he try floating ones to fix the rub?
