Noticed my cassette wore out twice as fast after switching lube last fall
I swapped to a cheaper wax-based lube back in October for my commuter bike in Portland, and by March the middle cogs were shark finned where they used to last me a full 8 months before. Same chain, same riding route, same rain, but the drivetrain noise came back around week 6 and I checked the wear with a chain gauge, it was fine, so I dug into the cassette. Anyone else seen lube choice nuke a cassette like this, or did I just get a bad batch from that brand?

Wax lube, huh. I ran a batch of that stuff one winter and my rear hub started making this grinding sound around mile 200. Took it apart, found grit packed in the pawls like sandpaper paste. Chain looked fine, gauge said fine, but everything else was dying quietly.
Portland rain does weird stuff to cheap lubes, they wash off fast and leave the metal dry. Then every shift grinds a little more off the cogs without you hearing it. Probably not a bad batch, just the wet season eating it alive.
