Three years ago I swore by WD-40 on bike chains

That was until I rebuilt a customer's drivetrain at my shop in Portland last month and saw the gunk it left inside. The chain was grinding after just 500 miles because the solvent dried out the factory lube. I switched to a dry wax lube from Squirt and now I never touch the spray can near a chain. Has anyone else had a bike come in with sticky residue from WD-40?

I read somewhere that WD-40 is mostly solvent, not lube, so no wonder it gums things up.

Funny thing is WD-40 isn't even a lubricant, it's a water displacer (which is what the name stands for) so people are basically just spraying it on there for the smell and hoping for the best.
