Vent: wasted 6 weeks clamping brake cables wrong until the Park Tool guy at Interbike showed me
I was pulling cable tight with pliers and tightening the bolt at the same time, which always let it slip a hair and gave me mushy brakes. A rep at the Portland show watched me do it and said to snug the bolt first, squeeze the lever, then torque it down, and it worked on the first try. What little habits took you years to unlearn?
Pulling with pliers and cranking the bolt at the same time never worked for me either, but I still do the snug-then-torque thing on the bolt before the lever squeeze. Squeezing the lever first just pushes the housing and lets the cable creep back once you let go. Whatever gets it tight on the first try though, right?
Wait, squeezing the lever first actually pushes the housing? That never even crossed my mind. I always figured the lever pull was just to seat things and take up slack, not that it could shove the housing and let the cable creep back. That would explain why my shifting would feel fine in the stand and then go soft on the first real ride. Guess I've been lucky it caught at all.
