I picked the $12 generic inhaler over the $190 brand and my lungs can't tell the difference
My insurance stopped covering my usual albuterol brand in January, so the pharmacy in Tucson quoted me $190 for the name brand or $12 for the generic. I stood at the counter for a good minute because the pharmacist kept giving me this look like I was about to poison myself, and the internet had me thinking the cheap version would barely work. I went with the $12 one anyway and after two months of using it before my morning runs, my peak flow numbers are identical to what they were on the expensive one. The only real difference I've noticed is the cheap one has a plastic taste for the first few puffs, and the counter clicks a little louder. My doctor even admitted the active ingredient is the same molecule when I asked him straight up. I get why people get scared off because the brand reps leave those coupon cards at the front desk, but the gap between $12 and $190 is not about how well it works. Has anyone actually had a generic inhaler fail on them, or is this fear mostly coming from the packaging?
