Question about whether skipping my statin and taking a $9 red yeast rice pill was smart or stupid
My doctor in Boise put me on a statin two winters back and the leg cramps got so bad I could barely do stairs, so I quit it cold and swapped to red yeast rice from the vitamin shop for $9 a month. My LDL came back at 118 last month, which is worse than the 92 I had on the prescription, but the cramps are gone and my wife says I seem more like myself. Now I can't tell if I traded real heart risk for feeling better, or if the drug makers just want me scared of the cheap stuff. Anyone here actually run this experiment on themselves and get a doctor to watch the numbers?
