Finally stopped being the friend who overpays at group dinners
Last Friday at a birthday dinner in Portland, I actually asked for my own check for the first time instead of splitting the table bill evenly. I used to just throw in $50 when my portion was maybe $30 because I hated the awkwardness. Now I gently say 'separate checks please' when the waiter comes around, and nobody has even blinked. It took me 5 years of resentment to realize most people are fine with it if you ask early. Has anyone else found a polite way to handle the appetizer sharing math?
