I swore I'd never do separate checks on a group dinner, then last Friday at a ramen place in Austin changed my mind
For like 6 years I was the guy who always said one check, everybody throws in cash, it all works out. I hated being the person doing math at the table and I hated watching friends pull out phones to split a $14 appetizer. Then last Friday my buddy Dave picked this ramen spot on South Lamar for his birthday, 9 of us, and the server straight up said they only do separate checks for groups over 6. I almost argued with her. But here's what got me. Dave had two bowls and three beers, his gf had one bowl no drinks, and I had one bowl and a soda. On one check that's me throwing in $60 to cover Dave's Sapporo habit. Instead I paid $23 even and we were out the door in 10 minutes. No one counted coins, no one owed anybody anything, Dave didn't have to eat $40 of other people's gyoza. I'm fully converted now and honestly kind of mad I wasted years doing it the old way. Anyone else flip on this after one specific dinner? Or am I just late to the party?
