I used to square up the whole dinner tab, now I itemize every drink and app
For like five years I'd just split group checks evenly, figured it was easier than arguing over a few bucks. Then last month in Denver, my buddy ordered two $18 cocktails while I had water, and the waitress handed us one bill. I paid $42 for his drinks and my $12 salad, and he just said 'thanks man' without even noticing. Now I ask the server for separate checks upfront, no exceptions. Anyone else start doing this after one bad split and never look back?

Skip the group bill math. One bad split pays for a lot of awkward conversations. Separate checks from the start, no exceptions.

People act like a buddy ordering expensive drinks is some kind of betrayal. Dude, it's $30. You saw him order it, you knew what was coming. Just say "hey, I'm only pitching in for my stuff" if it really bugs you, but acting like this is some big life lesson feels a little much. Separate checks are fine if you're with strangers, but with friends? That just makes every dinner feel like a business meeting. Maybe just don't eat out with people who'd stiff you on a $42 bill.
