Streaming service purge made me lose my place in a 14 year show

I was halfway through season 9 of a detective series I started back in 2010, and my streaming app removed it overnight when their licensing deal ended. There was no warning, no countdown, just a grayed out icon in my continue watching row. I called support at 8 AM and they said the show moved to a niche service I'd have to pay $12 a month extra for. Has anyone else hit this wall with a show disappearing mid-binge, and do you just start over somewhere else or track down the DVDs?
